Searching for a new book last night, I settled on this book by Harlan Ellison, mainly because it's one of those titles I've seen mentioned over and over again on various lists, and I enjoy a little sci-fi from time-to-time.I don't think I have ever been more put-off by a book than I was after reading Ellison talk about himself and how amazing he is in the preface. Still, I paid for the book already, so I pushed on. There are many pretentious artists out there, some of whom I like a great deal.I think I made it maybe 20 or so pages. His depiction of the female character was one of the most juvenile things I've ever read.
I give most books 50% before I make the call to push on or put it away, but after the scene where he writes about how much the female liked the crazy guy with the enlarged man bits, and how upset she was when she thought he was dead due to how much she enjoyed him. It was terrible, cringe-worthy stuff. I understand this was written in 1967, but that's no excuse for the drivel here. It felt like it was written by someone who has never met or spoken to an actual woman.I just don't get the appeal of this book at all. I would never touch another Ellison book.
His depiction of the female character was one of the most juvenile things I've ever read. The thing you need to remember when you read this is that the book is written from the perspective of an unreliable narrator. The narrator in I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream is not only insane, but absolutely hates the other four and also believes they hate him as well. He is not inclined to have the best impression of any of them. So when Ellison is writing about Ellen, he is writing what the narrator believes about her. As the reader, you are not intended to accept that depiction as accurate. The narrator also makes the claim that of the five he is the only one that is sane, when that clearly isn't the case.
I interpreted it as a) the narrator being insane as mentioned but also as b) they are in a state of absolute misery and squalor so she takes whatever pleasure she can, in this case the one man around who isn't terribly depressed and has animalistic tendancies so pretty obviously would be the best lay. And remember, the machine made them so it is probably has a laugh at a lesser-human being the only one to bring some happiness to the group. When I think about it, the fact that the lady pleasures all of men - 'doing her duty' - would be more offensive than her enjoying a large penis. But it doesn't.
It's just all part of this twisted world the author has depicted.
